CLASSES, WORKSHOPS AND RETREATS

Cheryl teaches classes, workshops and retreats both locally and traveling by invitation to your location.

Workshops and retreats are held at the Write Hand Lettering Studio or upon invitation. Most supplies are included but you may need some basic items.

Groups of 4 -6 participants can stay at the farm house on location. Retreats include an enthusiastic packed workshop with time to enjoy relaxation on the farm.

Depending on the weather, there is cross country skiing and hiking out the back door across the fields to the forest, or walking down the road to the river at the old steel bridge. The Stonehouse Gallery (See photos in The Gallery) is set up for personal reflection time. Meals included.

The farm and Studio is located between Kitchener and Stratford Ontario, Canada.

Contact Cheryl to register or to make arrangements.

B) LAUNCH INTO LETTERING ARTS

A well rounded introduction to the broad enjoyment of working with hand lettering. There will be much exposure to the exciting world of calligraphic arts with care, to bring a balance between the left-brained discipline of learning classic letter forms, AND right-brained playful related arts.

The class size is small so that Cheryl may work one on one to discover your personal interests as you design your final project.

We cover:

  • Roman letters using monoline tools and a variety of chisel tools
  • paste paper fun
  • card making
  • spacing of letters
  • design and layout
  • going through the design process to create a calligraphy piece on your choice of materials
  • perhaps a second letter style depending on the group

6 weeks -$120.00

C) CREATING A BANNER WITH THE MASTER - A Spiritual Journey

With Julia Cameron’s book “The Artist’s Way” beneath us, we will make our way past some of the blocks that hold us back from believing in ourselves as the creative pathways we were meant to be. Julia says, “The Great Creator has gifted us with creativity. Our gift back is our use of it... The process, not the product will become our focus”.

We will go through the physical steps of making a banner; developing a theme, design elements, working with materials and creating a piece.

Materials for experiments and preliminary work are included, but you will supply what you need to make your banner.

This may be of interest to people who create church banners or banners for personal purposes.

At the same time we will journey together at whatever depth is your comfort level into freeing ourselves, and giving ourselves permission to be creative.

4 weeks - $120.00

Also available as a retreat hosted by Cheryl at Write Hand Lettering Studio - June 25-27, 2010. $180.00

D) ART JOURNALING

"Art Play" techniques and inspiration.

6 weeks.

Also available as a retreat hosted by Cheryl at Write Hand Lettering Studio - April 23-25, 2010. $190.00

E) ONE-NIGHTERS

The following workshops are intended as single 2-hour sessions.

PAINTING ON FABRIC

You will use calligraphy tools to make strokes into designs. You have the option to hand-sew the design onto a pencil or make-up case. A good introduction to calligraphy before attempting lettering.

FOR THE LOVE OF QUOTES

You'll be amazed how exciting it is to learn a funky letter style called “knit knack”. We'll decorate a mat board with a simple painting technique then use our “knit knack” skill to letter a short quote on the mat. You may bring along some of your favourite quotes if you wish.

THE NEW YOU

Much like make-up enhances what you already have, learn to bring out the beauty of your own personal hand writing. We will do some fun, simple painting techniques, then put it all together by creating a card. Please bring along your own glue stick and scissors.

VINTAGE VENTURES

We will use authentic pre-1850 barn boards, complete with handmade square nails and faded whitewash, as a backdrop to paint on. Stencils and designs to transfer will be supplied - bring some if you have any. Canvas will also be supplied for those who want a smoother medium.
